MOST BRAVE FILM AWARD | CAPE TOWN 2023
‘//Hui !Gaeb’ aka The City of Cape Town, is a place where spirits live forever. Through a day in the life of Buhlebezwe, we travel through space and time, unveiling layers of the city and the memories it holds.
Experimental essay film by team Glucose Guardians (Lili Ming), Priya Jeram-Patel, Cian Geraghty, Saif Arbee, Sandulela Asanda and Lukhanyiso Skosana.
Every #BraveFutures film race challenges each team with a theme. For this race, it was "A New Home". The following is team Glucose Guardians' response to the theme.
With a loaded history of colonization, slavery and the apartheid regime, for many black and brown people, Cape Town has the ability to evoke a simultaneous sense of trauma, dislocation, pride and comfort. In spite of the malicious and systemic dislocation enforced by colonization, Buhlebezwe cements herself in the city as a black queer femme.
The film responds to the theme 'A New Home' through the non-linear time, as Buhlebezwe travels between space and time, recalling the memories of the city and the people who came before them.
Buhlebezwe reclaims the city that wants them dead and finds a sense of groundedness as they immerse themselves in the natural landscape of '//Hui !Gaeb' and the realm of the ancestors.
