Cape Town is known for its vast choices in recreational activities. But those who live outside the confines of the city often fall by the wayside, with very limited options (if any) to participate in. Skateboarding culture has a very large presence and growing impact among the youth in CPT. It has also grown to be a bit more inclusive, steering away from its white-male-centered focus, and has opened up spaces where more women, POC, and queer-folk have created a sense of community where there once wasn't; A New Home.
Although many find life-long bonds and communities within these spaces, they still have very far to travel to get there. We want to highlight the need for safe recreational spaces for young people, especially within townships where boredom may leave many susceptible to the bad behaviors around them. All while delivering a coming of age story about community, friendship, the power of relationships, self-actualization, and the need to belong.
Zee is a quiet young girl who finds comfort in routine and structure, struggling to live in the moment. In an attempt to try something new, she accepts an invitation given to her by a local skateboarder, Ace, who welcomes her into his world. This is where Zee finds a new sense of community, a new sense of self and the courage to live in the moment.
